The Alaska Marine Highway System, a
Proud Tradition. The mission of the Alaska Marine Highway System
is to provide safe, reliable, and efficient transportation of people,
goods, and vehicles among Alaska communities, Canada, and the "Lower
48," while providing opportunities to develop and maintain
a reasonable standard of living and high quality of life, including
social, education, and health needs.
The Alaska Marine Highway System has been operating
year-round since 1963, with regularly scheduled passenger and vehicle
service to 30 communities in Alaska, plus Bellingham, Washington,
and Prince Rupert, British Columbia. There are currently ten vessels
in the AMHS fleet, with additional other ferries either under construction
or planned. For more information about the new ferries, including
the Fast Vehicle Ferries, see the New Waves website.
During the past ten years the Alaska Marine Highway
System has carried an average of 400,000 passengers and 100,000
vehicles per year.

Inter-Island Ferry Authority
The Inter-Island Ferry runs between
Ketchikan and Prince of Wales Island twice daily in the summer and
once daily in the winter. The 2.5 hour one way trip allows visitors
to bring vehicles to Prince of Wales Island or simply provided
a low cost alternative for transportation to and from the island. For

of Wales, visit http://www.interislandferry.com |
