Information on Fishing in Ketchikan
Alaska and on nearby Prince of Wales Island
Runs of
Salmon migrate from the ocean, around the outer islands, like Prince
of Wales, and into the protected waters of Ketchikan and the Inside
Passage. This is why the area is known as the "Salmon
Capital of the World". This area is noted for chinook
or king salmon, coho or silver salmon, sockeye or red salmon,
humpy or pink salmon, and dog or chum salmon. This area also
yields halibut, snapper, ling cod, and rock cod.
The lake and stream fsihing also abound with steelhead, dolly
varden, grayling, rainbow, and cutthroat trout. Fly fishing in
the Ketchikan area is also excellent.
To arrange a fishing experience, look to Ketchikan or Prince of
Wales Island for excellent lodges and resorts. Your every need
will be attended to and you are assured to go home with a cooler
full of local fish. Charter captains will find the hot spots for
half, full, and mulit-day charters. Hotels, motels, and B&B's
also offer fishing packages.
For a more remote experience, visit the well equipped forest cabins
that the Alaska Forest Service maintains. Reservations are necessary
and transportation options are varied to these remote locations.
Most can be arranged from the Ketchikan International Airport.
Good luck on your Alaska fishing adventure.
